Magazine to be Printed with Help of Educational Grant

A small group of eight seniors has created a Metter High School first. This semester an online magazine was created by the Peer Leadership class to exhibit literary works of the students and staff of MHS. Mallory McLendon, magazine editor, explained that the magazine, entitled “In the Eye,” features art, photography, short stories and poetry submitted by the students and teachers.

“This magazine celebrates the creativity and imagination of students in the school,” said Mallory.

Throughout the course of the semester, the students learned about the creative process of designing a magazine. Under the guidance of Technology & Communications Specialist Tony Lescak, the magazine staff was introduced to publishing techniques and programs such as Adobe InDesign. After the creation of the magazine, Lescak and Teresa McLendon, the magazine’s faculty advisor, realized the talent the magazine showcased. Mrs. McLendon applied for a grant from the Candler County Foundation for Public Education in hopes of making the magazine more than just an online edition. McLendon explained that the class received the grant, totaling $1,284, and these funds would provide for the printing costs of the magazine. The magazine is currently available on the high school’s website and will be printed later this year for distribution at locations such as Metter Welcome Center.

“None of this would be possible without the Candler County Education Foundation, and the staff are very appreciative for the grant and assistance they have been given,” said Mrs. McLendon.

The Education Foundation was formed in 2006, establishing an account of secure funds solely for the purpose of providing programs and activities that stimulate and accelerate learning for Candler County School children. Funds are donated by the community in several forms such as cash, annual gifts, payroll deductions, major gifts, deferred gifts and grants.

A committee of local citizens and educators evaluate applications submitted by teachers to determine how the Foundation’s funds should be dispersed. For more information about the Foundation, contact Candler County Board of Education, 912-685-5713 or visit www.metter.org.
