The Candler County Foundation
for Public Education recently awarded two grants totaling $770 for unique learning opportunities for groups at Metter High and Metter Elementary School.
The Foundation awarded Becky Waters, MHS Spanish teacher, $330 to help fund a special trip for the MHS Spanish Club.
The 21 club members will be attending a dramatic production
of the Spanish novel, “Don Quijote de la Mancha” in Savannah on April 15 and will dine at a Spanish restaurant.
At Metter Elementary, music
teacher Len Hunnicutt was awarded a $440 grant to be used as matching funds for a Grassroots Arts Grant Program. The funds will be used to bring Joanna Maddox,
actress and storyteller, to the school for Heritage Days and to purchase consumable art supplies for the Pumpkin Pageant and Parade.
The entire student body of the school will be included in the Heritage Days celebration.
The Foundation was established
in 2006 to provide enrichment opportunities for students in the Candler County School System. Foundation
funding allows students
to expand their educational
experience through programs that are “above and beyond” traditional classroom opportunities.
The 2008 contribution drive of Candler County Foundation for Public Education
saw more than $16,600 raised to sponsor educational opportunities in the county. Board of Education employees
themselves contributed largely to the fund, pledging more than $5,500.
